+++ Hot weather alert +++

You will have seen that the Met Office has issued an amber weather alert for our region on Monday and Tuesday next week.  In response, please note the following:

  • For the remainder of term, students will now have the option of coming to school in TLA PE kit (not other sportswear) or their summer uniform.  This applies whether they have PE or not.
  • Students who arrive wearing clothing other than TLA PE kit or summer uniform may be sent home to change as usual.
  • Please ensure your child has a water bottle, a hat and sun cream.
  • We will continue to ensure the best possible ventilation in the school buildings.
  • PE outdoor teaching will be limited as appropriate.
  • In order to remain operational, the hot food offer from the canteen will be severely limited.  Cold food will still be fully available.
  • Indoor spaces will be available to all students at break and lunch, specifically the atrium and main hall.

Please remind your children of the importance of staying safe in the sun - even for short periods.  Thank you for your support and understanding.

Year 6 Transition Days
On Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 July we welcomed students in year 6 who will be joining us in September as year 7 students for their Transition Days. The students made new friends, met their tutors and were able to explore the academy as well as enjoying burgers and in the canteen. A special thanks to our Year 9 Face2Face student team who were amazing ambassadors for TLA and supported tutor groups on both days. This September we have 290 new students joining year 7 here at TLA. This is our largest ever student intake and we are very excited to be welcoming these new students and their families to the TLA community.

Uni Connect - Mr Devo is interviewed about TLA's work to promote Higher Education

Our very own Mr Devo works hard to promote Higher Education with our Sixth Formers. You can read more about his work in this interview. Well done, sir!

Sports Day
Last Friday our students competed in our annual Sports Day. The day was a huge success with all students taking part in a variety of Track, Field and Alternative events. Our students were a credit to the academy, demonstrating our core values consistently on what was a very warm day. During period 5, the whole school gathered around the track for the finals to cheer on some outstanding individual performances, all contributing to the team effort of winning the newly introduced Tutor Group Sports Day Cup!

A huge congratulations to 7JCO, 8SWE, 9LSH and 10MWL who won their trophies respectively. We cannot wait for next year!

Accelerated Reader Awards
Huge congratulations to our KS3 Accelerated Reader Award winners this week. Parents and carers were invited along to our awards celebration in the library, where students received certificates and prizes for their excellent progress and achievements in reading this year. It was lovely to have our parents and carers join us again for the celebration, something we haven’t been able to do since Covid. We also had 3 outstanding reading achievements to award this year from Year 9. Huge congratulations to Madi Thomas and Alfie Boyle who both received their 10 million word trophies, and Aaron Hill who received his 30 million word trophy—a TLA reading record! A tremendous effort made by all 3 students and I was delighted to able to award them their trophies.

Fantasy Football
This upcoming academic year will see the first TLA fantasy football whole school competition. Students will be competing alongside staff to discover who will be the best fantasy manager. There will be a prize for the winning manager at the end of the year!

The league will be run via the official premier league website and students will need to sign up via the site using an email. If students are under the age of 13 they must seek parental guidance when doing this. Once registered, follow the instructions to create a team, as part of this students will need to select a team name. This name must be appropriate and will be checked upon entry to the league, unsuitable names will result in removal from the league and the student will be prevented from entering.

Once registered students will need to navigate to ‘join a league & cup’ and enter the code g0h4lb.

The football season starts earlier this year due to the World Cup, the deadline to have the team created and registered is Friday 5 August at 18.30.

If there are any questions or queries then please direct them to Mr Coppard in the Sport and Technology Faculty.
