Year 6 into 7

We are delighted that you have chosen TLA and are very much looking forward to welcoming you to the Academy as you embark upon the next chapter of your learning journey.

Starting at a new school can be both exciting and a little scary. But there is no need to worry; a lot is happening behind the scenes here at TLA to make sure that you get off to a flying start. The information on this page will hopefully answer some of the questions that you may have, however if you require any further information or assistance, you can always contact us directly by email (transition@tla.woodard.co.uk) or via the Academy reception (01903 711120)

Transition Packs

You should have received a transition pack through the post. Please do complete this and return using the stamped, addressed envelope provided.

It is vital that before starting school, we have all of the correct contact information and details of any medical needs. The Transition Pack also contains lots of useful information about the structure of the day within the Academy and our policies and procedures.

If you have not received a transition pack please do let us know as soon as possible.

Getting to Know You

Ensuring that our students are known and nurtured is very much a part of the fabric of TLA.

During the period of school closures we are still in dialogue with our feeder primary schools to find out as much as we can about our students and their learning needs, ensuring that the transition from primary to secondary education will be a smooth and enjoyable experience for all.

We have also sent a ‘Transition Activities Booklet’ for your child to complete. There are a variety of activities that allow your child to get to know TLA a little better, as well as us getting to know a little more about your child. Please feel free to return this with your completed paperwork, or alternatively keep it safe to bring on the Transition Days.

Transition Days

As in previous years, TLA has made provision to  run two transition days. At present, these are scheduled for Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 July 2020, however I am sure you will appreciate that this is subject to change due to current school closures.

We will be able to give further confirmation upon receipt of appropriate guidance from the Department for Education, which we will communicate as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below a selection of frequently asked questions from Y6 students. If you have any other questions, please let us know!

What Chapter will I be placed in?

Students are assigned to a Chapter randomly unless they have a sibling already at TLA. We always try to keep siblings in the same Chapter.

Can I choose my tutor group?

You will spend the next five years with the same tutor group and so it is vital that we get the group dynamics right. To do this we speak to your primary schools to find out who you work well with, as well as looking at a range of other data including behaviours for learning and attendance.

It is important that you feel comfortable within your tutor group and so we do our best to ensure that everyone is with someone that they know and work well with, however we respectfully ask that parents/carers do not make requests or recommendations for groupings.

Where can I go at break and lunchtime?

Year 7 students have their own space at the front of the Academy with picnic benches and grass to play sports and games Students in other year groups are not allowed to use this space. Year 7 students are of course very welcome to use all of the space around the Academy if they wish.

What modern foreign language will I study?

At TLA students will study either French or Spanish, your group is determined by the language studied at primary school.

We are aware that students in a number of our feeder schools have studied both languages, and there is a form in your transition pack to allow you to express a preference for which language to continue studying. Please note - This is a preference, and we cannot guarantee this, depending on space within classes.

Are there any clubs that I can join?

We have a large number of co-curricular clubs and teams that you can join. These change every year and can also depend on the season. Everyone is welcome to join and you will find out more in the first few weeks of term.
