Getting to Know You

Ensuring that our students are known and nurtured is very much a part of the fabric of TLA.

Throughout the summer term we are still in dialogue with our feeder primary schools to find out as much as we can about our students and their learning needs, ensuring that the transition from primary to secondary education will be a smooth and enjoyable experience for all.

We have also sent a ‘Transition Activities Booklet’ for your child to complete. There are a variety of activities that allow your child to get to know TLA a little better, as well as us getting to know a little more about your child. Please feel free to return this with your completed paperwork, or alternatively keep it safe to bring on the Transition Days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below a selection of frequently asked questions from Y6 students. If you have any other questions, please let us know!

What Chapter will I be placed in?

Students are assigned to a Chapter randomly unless they have a sibling already at TLA. We always try to keep siblings in the same Chapter.

Can I choose my tutor group?

You will spend the next five years with the same tutor group and so it is vital that we get the group dynamics right. To do this we speak to your primary schools to find out who you work well with, as well as looking at a range of other data including behaviours for learning and attendance.

It is important that you feel comfortable within your tutor group and so we do our best to ensure that everyone is with someone that they know and work well with, however we respectfully ask that parents/carers do not make requests or recommendations for groupings.

Where can I go at break and lunchtime?

Year 7 students have their own space at the front of the Academy with picnic benches and grass to play sports and games Students in other year groups are not allowed to use this space. Year 7 students are of course very welcome to use all of the space around the Academy if they wish.

What modern foreign language will I study?

Students have previously been invited via an online survey to choose from either French or Spanish, they will study this throughout years 7-9. This survey is now closed and those who have not chosen a language will be allocated to either a French or Spanish class depending on available spaces.

Are there any clubs that I can join?

We have a large number of co-curricular clubs and teams that you can join. These change every year and can also depend on the season. Everyone is welcome to join and you will find out more in the first few weeks of term.

Transition Days

Following further guidance from the DfE we have taken the decision to postpone the July transition days until September. Whilst we are extremely disappointed, we believe this is the right decision at this time. Further details about the September transition days will be released soon.

Welcome Pack

You should have received a welcome pack either via email or post.

It is vital that before starting school, we have all of the correct contact information and details of any medical needs. The Welcome Pack also contains lots of useful information about the structure of the day within the Academy and our policies and procedures.

If you have not received a welcome pack please do let us know as soon as possible.
