Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of our students, colleagues, families and friends! We will see you on Wednesday 5th January 2022.

Road safety and the Fitzalan link road - Last week, I informed you that I had contacted the West Sussex Highways Principal Engineer about this stretch of road to highlight my concerns. We have received the following press release from a WSCC spokesperson:  "We are sorry to hear of any incident such as this and hope the student is making a good recovery.  All roads are subject to safety audits before they are built – at the feasibility and detailed design stages. In the case of the Fitzalan Link Road, the design incorporates a signal-controlled crossing facility outside of the school to assist students crossing the road. There is a further safety audit once roads are opened to traffic and this takes place this week.  We will need to review the outcome of this independent road safety audit, together with the road traffic collision report, to better understand matters. We will then liaise with the developer and their designer to see if any changes are required."

Christmas Card competition - Congratulations to Viktoria Bartha, Y9 who created the winning design. The card has been sent out to lots of other schools, outside contacts and companies. Thank you to all the students who took part in the competition.

Energy drinks: Please remember that fizzy drinks like coke are banned from the academy because of the negative impacts that they have on health and behaviour.  We also know that some local shops have sold high-sugar, high-caffeine drinks to some of our students.  These will always be confiscated and disposed of.  An example is in the picture shown below.  This drink contains 160mg of caffeine which is more than four times the amount in a regular can of coke. It also seriously exceeds the recommended daily limit for young people, which is around 100mg per day.  The label even says it's not suitable for children!  This drink also contains 52g of sugar.  According to the NHS, the daily limit for adults is 30g - and less for children.  Please support us - and protect the health and wellbeing of your children - to ensure that these drinks are not brought into school.

Payment Cards - From January, can you please ensure that your child brings their Wisepay payment card with them to school to use at the canteen. Without this, even if there are funds on their card, it can be difficult to ensure that payment is dealt with correctly and it leads to significant delays at the tills both for the child concerned and for all others held in the queue behind them.

If cards have been lost or broken replacements can be ordered on the Wisepay account and collected from the Network Services office at the school.

Staff Goodbyes: We bid farewell to colleagues who are moving on to pastures new. I would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication to the students here in Littlehampton.

Goodbye and best wishes for the future to: Mrs Barnes, Mrs Parker-Sibun, Ms Purushothaman and Mr Stevens. I would also like to say a special thank you to Mrs Ridgway who has been with the academy since 2011 and a member of the senior leadership team since 2016. She is moving on to a new role at East Sussex County Council and we wish her every success.

I am also delighted to announce that Ms Sue Pike has just joined TLA as Vice Principal. Ms Pike will be responsible for Teaching and Learning.

Celebration Assembly: Today we celebrated all that is good about TLA. Our talented students and our amazing staff. The assembly includes highlights from the Carol Concert and the REAP awards for both students and staff.
