Languages
Our MFL curriculum aims to foster a love of authentic language learning and deepen pupils’ understanding of the world around us. We are committed to broadening pupils’ cultural horizons and promoting global citizenship by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively in another language. Our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and deepen understanding of other cultures and communities. We also aim to develop the four key skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language and build a strong foundation in grammar and vocabulary. We aim to use a range of activities that encourage resilience, confidence, and independence in language learning and prepare pupils for further language study at Key Stage 4 and beyond. We aim for all pupils to leave Key Stage 3 with the linguistic skills and cultural awareness needed to thrive in a multilingual, global society.
KS3
In KS3 lessons are balanced between the four core skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking over 5 lessons a fortnight. In addition to skills based learning, students will learn about the target country’s culture including music, films, traditions, food and festivals. Lessons will be taught in a variety of ways to ensure that students of all abilities are able to access the curriculum through, chanting, singing, acting, drawing as well as introducing exam techniques in preparation for the next key stage. Topics have been carefully selected to prepare students for the next key stage and include themes such as holidays, school, town and local region, technology, pop culture and of course the basics in the beginning. All students study either French or Spanish in KS3. Dual linguist opportunities are provided for our most determined linguists where both languages are studied in KS3.
KS4
In KS4, languages remain optional at GCSE level and students opt in Year 9 and can choose either French or Spanish to study at GCSE or indeed both. Students are taught in mixed-ability groups and teachers promote a life-long love of language learning based on a curriculum that promotes an interest in other cultures and languages. There is an emphasis on pop culture, so students will be encouraged to engage in listening to music and watching films in order to better understand the target country’s culture and improve their listening skills. In addition to the above themes listed in KS3, students will further develop their learning by studying topics such as the environment, national and international issues, the world of work and education post 16. Assessments will be carefully planned to ensure that students are provided with every opportunity to succeed across the four core skills with opportunities to intervene and support where necessary. There is a Higher and Foundation pathway for students to allow students to work at their own ability with the support of their teacher.
