Congratulations to Sophia Hendey, Year 9
Sophia hendeyLittlehampton's Mayoress, Cllr Michelle Molloy recently presented Sophia with her Distinction Medal and Certificate. The Distinction award is the culmination of some nine different exams at bronze, silver and gold levels as well as additional tests for Life Support, Resuscitation and First Aid. Sophia has worked incredibly hard and this is an amazing achievement. Well done Sophia, we are all very proud of you!

Behaviour update
At TLA we have clear expectations of our students, and the vast majority live up to these by arriving on time every day and maintaining high standards of behaviour and effort, both in and out of lessons. To support this, we have recently made some improvements to our behaviour systems, focused particularly around lateness to the Academy in the morning, and plans for detentions for instances of negative behaviour.

These are summarised below:-

Lateness: If a student arrives at school after the normal start time of 08:30, they will enter through the main student entrance, and we will always ask them to sign in at Student Services. If they do not have an authorised reason for their lateness, they will be given a card to take to their lesson, show their teacher and keep. They must then attend a lunchtime lateness detention on that same day -  details of the detention (when/where, etc) are detailed on the card. If they do not attend the lunchtime detention, this will be escalated to a 30-minute detention after school on the following day.

Detentions: When students fail to meet our expectations of behaviour and/or effort, teachers may assign them a 30-minute after-school detention as a consequence. This will usually take place on the next school day. If a student fails to attend this session, it will be escalated to a 60-minute after-school detention on the following day. All detentions will be logged on Go4Schools, so we would encourage all parents to ensure that they have access to be able to see any allocated detentions.

Talk the Talk workshops - Year 7
We were delighted to welcome trainers from 'Talk the Talk' to the academy this week to work with some of our Year 7 students on their oracy and public speaking. It was wonderful to see how many of them grew in confidence and stature in just a few hours, something that will be hugely beneficial both in school and in their future lives. The trainers have nominated the most impressive speakers from each tutor group, who will receive their commendations in our forthcoming end of term celebration assembly. A huge well done to all those who participated, particularly those who tried really hard to overcome initial nervousness. We are looking forward to welcoming the trainers back to the academy in January to work with our final three tutor groups in Year 7 - 7JCO, 7MNE and 7HMU.

Christmas Carol Celebration - Wednesday 15 December
You are warmly welcomed to this event. The doors will open at 7pm and the celebration event will run from 7:30-8:30pm. Tea, coffee and mince pies will be available and all donations to support our work in Romania would be gratefully received. More information can be found here

New Link Road
We have just been notified that the Fitzalan Link Road between the A259 Worthing Road and the academy will be opened on Wednesday 8 December, mid morning. Please be mindful of this if you are dropping off or picking up your child by car: the road is designed to keep traffic moving and this has implications for parents who are accustomed to parking on the road at present.

Please also make sure that you discuss this new road with your children. Traffic patterns will be different and potentially faster. Students need to be fully aware of their environment from a road safety point of view. We will also help to keep our young people safe with road safety information in tutor time next week.

When the road is open, we will be reopening the West gate (opposite Highdown Drive) as a pedestrian entrance for students. It will be locked at 08:30 meaning that students arriving late will need to use the main Fitzalan Road entrance.
